Repairs & Restoration Services In Essex and Suffolk
Established in 1985, with our expertise carpentery and specialist joinery spanning in excess of 30 years, we are a friendly, professional and honest attitude to all our customers projects.
From initially being thrown in at the deep end, being asked to get a sash window working again and feeling nervous about what I need to do and how to go about doing it, I was then hooked and interested in doing the sash windows as a main interest, I was then doing research on things that can be done and which then cemented my interest and the since then I have been doing everything from replacing a single cord right up to replacing the whole window.
I am also making plans to make all types of windows and individual sashes and casements to supply only or supply and fit to fellow trades persons or compident DIY’ers alike.
Much of the work is to carry out a service, which is to remove the upper and lower sashes, cleaning down any lumps of paint that have built up over the years, which can inhibit the smooth running of the window sashes, to both the sashes and the frame, then to weigh the sashes and the weights to make sure that the correct weight is fitted then to replace the cords to all four pulleys and to then refit everything back together and test as the final part.
The parting beads and cords are changed as part of the service, also the pulleys are checked for wear and tear too, prior to refitting.
Everything is documented and checked with the customer prior to anything being changed or upgraded.
Any decayed section of a sash window can be professionally repaired by splicing sections of timber in its place, including frames, sills and the parts of the sash.
A full refurbishment would entail to the paint to the sashes and the frames, replace the catches, the four pulleys, the staff and parting beads and the four cords and check the glazing and the putty to the outside, everything will be painted with an industrial wood preservative and insect killer and then allowed to dry before adding a coat of a trade grade primer and coating all sides prior to refitting in position and then checking for operation.

"Mark has worked for us over a number of year, carrying out the woodwork repairs and maintenance of our sash windows.

"We first met Mark from A B Carpentry approximately nine years ago when we were about to have our farmhouse decorated externally. Our decorator recommended Mark and we never looked back, many of our windows were in a really bad state and needed extensive repairs as it was not possible to replace the windows due to the amount of work required to do so, we were amazed with the end result and all without using lots of wood filler too, there were many timber repairs to the sash windows and the normal side opening windows and quite a few window sills to replace too. I have no problem in recommending A B Carpentry for all your wood working repairs."
